Seattle

Seattle, in the U.S. state of Washington, is in a natural location for a city in the same way as Los Angeles and San Francisco, both far to the south. Ever since the region was explored by the Lewis and Clark Expedition, very early in the Nineteenth Century, it seemed inevitable that a major city of the U.S. northwest would eventually emerge. The state of Washington is named for America's first president although he could not possibly had any idea of what there was this far west.

Seattle grew by being a gateway for Americans to the Klondike Gold Rush, in the far north of Canada, near the end of the Nineteenth Century.

The best-known symbol of Seattle, and of all of Washington state, is the Space Needle. It is an observation tower that was built for the 1962 World's Fair. The following views of Seattle begin at the top of the Space Needle. The first two images are from Google Earth and Street View.

A well-known neighborhood of Seattle is Queen Anne Hill. It is to the north of the Space Needle so that the Space Needle can be seen against the background of the downtown buildings, The mountain that can be seen in the distance is Mount Rainier. The first image is from Google Earth.

To the east of Seattle is Bellevue. Microsoft is also located east of Seattle. Other global companies associated with Seattle are Starbucks, Amazon and, Boeing. Although Boeing moved it's headquarters to Chicago in 2001, planes are still built in the Seattle area.

Not too far from Seattle is Mount Rainier. It is part of the Pacific Rim of potentially active volcanos. I can remember, in 1980, Mount St. Helens, also in Washington state, erupted. It caused a noticeable blue tinge to the moon, when the moon was low in the western sky, as seen from the eastern U.S. This is the summit of Mount Rainier from Google Earth.

These two images from Google Earth are of Mount St. Helen's. Notice that one side of the cone was blasted away by the eruption of 1980.

THE MYSTERY OF D.B. COOPER

Here is a mystery that many people in the northwestern U.S. have an opinion on.

On November 24, 1971, a short flight, on a Boeing 727, from Portland, Oregon to Seattle was hijacked by a man who appeared to be in his forties. The man was polite and showed a stewardess a note indicating that he had a bomb. He later showed the stewardess the bomb, which had what appeared to be several red sticks of dynamite. The hijacker gave his name as Dan Cooper, which was actually misreported as D.B. Cooper.

He demanded $200,000 and parachutes upon landing at Seattle, and also for the plane to be refueled there. The passengers were released at Seattle but the crew was kept behind. He issued certain flying conditions and then demanded to be taken to Mexico City. Another refueling would be necessary, which would be done during a stop at Reno.

But not long after taking off from Seattle, the hijacker put on one of the parachutes and jumped from the plane's rear door. Other planes had been following the hijacked plane but saw nothing. It is believed that the hijacker asked for more than one parachute to make it seem as if he would take some of the crew would him, and he would this not purposely be given a parachute that would not open.

According to the opinion of many experts on skydiving, it would be very unlikely that he would have survived the jump, which took place at night and in bad weather conditions. But yet no trace of the hijacker or his parachute has ever been found, despite very intensive searching. Years later, a single bundle of the bills was found.

This has been a much-discussed mystery ever since. There are still regularly articles about it in the news. Many people have come forward with suspicions about who the hijacker was, but none has amounted to anything.

According to one opinion that I recall reading, the bomb was almost certainly a fake. Sticks of dynamite are red only in cartoons.

The event is commemorated by various events. According to one report that I read, a girl had been working the counter in a temporary shop selling D.B. Cooper souvenirs. When no one else was in the shop a man walked in, wearing dark glasses, that, adjusted for age, looked exactly like D.B. Cooper. He quickly looked over everything in the shop and then left without buying anything.

It would have been difficult to spend the money because the numbers of the bills had been carefully recorded, and it was remembered that was how the kidnapper of Charles Lindbergh's son got caught.

Anyway, aside from that single bundle of bills, not a trace of D.B. Cooper has ever been found.
