Air travel today is generally considered as a massive hassle. But there was a time, in the early days of jet passenger planes, when airports would have restaurants and people would come to watch the planes landing and taking off while dining.
The aviation industry deserves a lot of credit for safety. I remember when plane crashes were in the news on a regular basis, today they are rare. Statistically, you are far safer in a plane than in a car. By far the most dangerous part of a flight is the drive, in a car, to and from the airport. Even on 9/11, an air passenger was statistically safer than being in a car.
