Uruguay

Uruguay gained independence from Spain in the same way as neighboring Argentina. Like Argentina, beef from it's ranches is an important part of the diet and culture and also like Argentina it has the Sun of May on it's flag, although there is a difference between the two suns.

The primary difference between Argentina and Uruguay is that Uruguay was, for a time, under first Portuguese and then Brazilian rule. It was something of a border region between the Spanish and Portuguese Empires. Argentina was already independent by the time Uruguay became independent, and this is likely the reason why the two ended up as separate countries.

The capital, and by far the largest city of Uruguay is Montevideo, a port on the Atlantic Ocean. The following scenes of the Old City of Montevideo begin in the Metropolitan Cathedral. The stone building with the elaborate tower is the Palacio Salvo.

There are multiple scenes following. To see the scenes, after the first one, you must first click the up arrow, ^, before you can move on to the next scene by clicking the right or forward arrow, >, After clicking the up arrow, you can then hide the previews of successive scenes, if you wish.

Just as Buenos Aires has an obelisk on 9 de Julio Avenue, Montevideo has it's own obelisk on it's 18 de Julio Avenue. The obelisk in Montevideo is not as large, but was there before, the one in Buenos Aires. July 18 is the date on which the Uruguayan Constitution was written. The following scenes begin at the obelisk in Montevideo.
