The final Boeing 747 has been produced. I think the last time I went to Europe and back it was on Airbus but, other than that, every flight I have taken has been on a 747.
The 747 was introduced right at the beginning of the 1970s. It made it's highly-publicized maiden flight from New York to London. In 1977 the worst aircraft accident, other than terrorism, happened in Tenerife, in the Canary Islands. Two 747s collided when the airport was shrouded in fog and one misinterpreted instructions and struck the other while trying to take off.
What is not widely known is that the Pan Am plane that was involved in this accident is the same plane that had made the maiden flight seven years earlier.
