One of the stars of the Rock Music Era, Ontario's Gordon Lightfoot, has died. The Toronto area made a major contribution to Rock Music. Other stars were Joni Mitchell, Neil Young and, Rush.
If Canada didn't have the maple leaf as it's national symbol would Rush have done a song about a war between trees in a forest? Bands in the U.S. and Britain would never have thought of that.
Does anyone remember "Sam The Record Man", the great record store on Yonge Street in the days of vinyl records?
THE MEANING OF DAYLIGHT KATY
The meaning of the song "Daylight Katy", by Gordon Lightfoot in 1978, has long been a mystery. There is a range of opinions online as to the meaning of the song.
"Katy" is the name that is closest to "cat".
The song describes Katy as "living nine lives in her midnight world". Cats are said to have "nine lives". Why would she be called "Daylight Katy" if she lives in a "midnight world" and "She doesn't have to get up in the morning"? It is because cats can see at night. To "Daylight Katy" the night is as good as daylight.
The other refrain is "If you can't follow me down, Daylight Katy go home". This means that, unlike dogs, cats will not follow their owners or obey commands.
Katy is described as "living in town with her high-heeled friends". A cat's hind feet look like "high heels".
The song states that "She knows it's a long way down". This is about the proclivity of some cats to climb to high places, usually trees.
Daylight Katy is a long-fur cat. I see a couple of opinions that it is a cat. This is my opinion.
AN AMAZING TORONTO STORY FROM THE ROCK MUSIC ERA
Almost exactly fifty years ago something absolutely unprecedented took place. A Toronto radio announcer, named Gordon Sinclair, made a speech praising America. It was not long after the peace agreement in the Vietnam War. Although the facts presented in the speech were not entirely accurate, it soon got a lot of attention.
The next thing we knew the recording of the speech had been made into a song, and released as a record. It wasn't really a song, just the speech with music playing in the background, but it got a lot of airplay.
We saw in the posting "Names And Canadian Politics" how the name "Mackenzie" is a very Canadian name. No less than three Prime Ministers of Canada as a first or last name, with none related to the others, as well as the first mayor of Toronto. An early explorer named Mackenzie gave his name to a river in the far north of Canada.
"Sinclair" is also a very Canadian name.
