Northwestern Italy And Sardinia

Milan, the capital of the northern region of Lombardy, is Italy's second city, after Rome, but is the center of the largest overall urban area. The settlement began before Roman times, was a medieval duchy, and is today Italy's financial center.

The Edict of Milan, from the year 313, is the legalization of Christianity in the Roman Empire.

There were three separate Italian wars of independence in the Nineteenth Century, against the Habsburgs, with Lombardy joining neighboring Piedmont and Sardinia as the beginnings of a united Italy.

Piazza Del Duomo is the square in front of Milan Cathedral. The first five images are from Google Earth and Street View.

The first scene is inside the nearby Galleria Victor Emmanuel II so that Toronto readers can see the enclosed structure of shopping, after which the Eaton Centre was modeled. Victor Emmanuel II was the first king of united Italy. This first image is from Google Street View.

Parma is an ancient city that originated with the Etruscans, who came before the Romans. Like Cremona, Parma has a square with an octagonal baptisery next to the cathedral. The first two images are from Google Earth and Street View.

Turin was the first capital city of united Italy, in the Nineteenth Century. Like Milan, it is now industrial and can be considered as Italy's automotive city. Turin was the home of the royal House of Savoy. It was Piedmont, the area around Turin, and Sardinia that actually put the united Italy together.

Italy used to be a kingdom. There were four successive kings, two named Victor Emmanuel and two named Umberto, before the 1946 referendum to do away with the monarchy. The second king, Umberto I, was assassinated in 1900. The kings were from the House of Savoy.

In a chapel of the former Royal Palace is the chapel that holds the Shroud of Turin. It is believed by some to be the cloth in which Jesus was buried, with the image of His face and body permanently impressed on the cloth. It is believed by others to be a medieval forgery. The Catholic Church has no official position on it.

This is more of central Turin. These two scenes of Piazza Costello are from Google Earth.

These two scenes, from Google Earth, are of Piazza Veneto, in Turin. Doesn't this remind you of Place Concorde?

The island of Sardinia is far to the south of cities like Milan and Turin. The reason that I have included it here is that it was actually the Kingdom of Sardinia, united with Piedmont and run from Turin, that put the united country of Italy together. Rome was the last place to be included.

The southern tip of Sardinia is a very strategic location. There grew up the port city of Cagliari. It is a very ancient city that is of Phoenician origin. After the Phoenicians, the city was controlled by Carthage, which was the great enemy of the Romans and also began as a Phoenician colony. The House of Savoy gained control of Sardinia in 1718.

These three images, from Google Earth and Street View, are of the cathedral and the castle overlooking the city, in Cagliari.

This is the center of Cagliari.
