Aqueducts Carrying Canals

Here is something that we don't see very often. An aqueduct, or bridge, is carrying a canal over a road. It is the Veluwemeer Aqueduct, in the Netherlands. Three images from Google Street View.

The other place that we see this is New York State. The Erie Canal crosses the state east-west and has to cross rivers flowing northward, whose water levels are below that of the canal.

In Rochester, the canal used to cross the Genesee River by what is known as the Broad Street Bridge. Three images from Google Street View.

The Erie Canal was later rerouted to the south around Rochester. Now it crosses the Genesee River upstream, where the river's water level is higher. No aqueduct is necessary because the waters of the canal and the river are at the same level. Image from Google Earth.

In Rochester, you can still see places where the canal was before it was rerouted such as the grass across the center of this image from Google Earth.
