The U.S. was transfixed for eleven days by a female deputy, supposedly on her final day of work before retirement, who escaped with a male prisoner who had been in her charge.
The story finally ended in Indiana. The two had bought a vehicle, a Cadillac, and were in the process of abandoning the vehicle that they already had, a pickup truck. They made the mistake of abandoning the pickup truck at a car wash. The two were caught on security camera abandoning the pickup truck and leaving in the Cadillac. I don't know why criminals get tattoos but the fugitive's prominent tattoo, on his forearm, was clearly visible in the security footage.
The plate number of the Cadillac wasn't visible but the police looked around for the vehicle and one matching it was seen in a motel parking lot. The car was watched to see who got into it and, sure enough, it was them.
A short chase followed until a police or Marshal vehicle was able to ram the Cadillac, and force it into a ditch.
As with "Convoy" in Ottawa earlier this year we have to wonder if this was life imitating music. Two popular songs from the rock music era were "Alabama Getaway" by "The Grateful Dead" and "Indiana Wants Me" by R. Dean Taylor, about the police closing in on a fugitive.
