Eastern France

 Lyon is the third-largest city in France, after Paris and Marseilles. These two images, from Google Earth and Street View, are of Place Des Terreaux and Lyon City Hall.


This is another view, from Google Earth, of the white buildings with red roofs in the old part of Lyon.

On a hill above Lyon is the Basilica Fourviere. This could be considered as the city's equivalent of Sacre Coeur, in Paris, and was built around the same time, near the end of the Nineteenth Century. The first three images are from Google Earth and Street View.

The modern downtown of Lyon, that goes back to Roman times, is La Part Dieu.

St. Etienne is a medieval city in eastern France that was later an important center of industry because there was coal nearby. The first image is from Google Earth.

Grenoble, like Lyon, goes back to ancient times. it was an important city during the Middle Ages and today is a focal point of high technology. It is known for it's nearby mountains and cable cars and the chemical industries that were attracted by the electricity that could be generated. One well-known sight in Grenoble is the Palace of the Parliament of Dauphine. First image from Google Earth.

Here is a hillside fortification above Grenoble known as the Bastille.

The city of Strasbourg is on the border with Germany. It is the location of the European Union Parliament. Strasbourg was part of Germany from the Franco-Prussian War of 1871 to the end of the First World War, in 1918. This was the time of the German Empire of the Kaisers.  This is the picturesque old part of the city.

The following look at the old part of Strasbourg begins in the square between the cathedral and Palais Rohan. Having been part of Germany, notice the buildings with peaked roofs that are of German design. The first two images, from Google Street View, show the German architecture.

This is an "everyday" part of Strasbourg.

Finally, we come to the attractive city of Nancy. It's main square, Place Stanislas, was actually set up by a Polish king, Stanislas I. Image from Google Earth.
