The Interior Of Brazil

What result would we get if, instead of letting a city grow over time as cities usually do, we designed and built an entire city at once. This is sometimes done when a nation wants to build an entirely new city as it's capital city, rather than selecting an existing city. St. Petersburg was built by Peter the Great as capital of Russia. Washington was specially built as the U.S. capital, as was Canberra for Australia and Islamabad for Pakistan.

The most recent building of a city especially to serve as a nation's capital is Brasilia, the capital of Brazil. The exception is Naypitaw, which was more recently constructed as the capital of Myanmar (Burma), but that is a more closed society and is not covered by Google Street View.

Rio De Janiero, which we visited in "The Olympics In Rio", was the capital of Brazil until 1960. The purpose of building Brasilia was the put the emphasis on the vast interior of Brazil, as it's major cities were all on the coast. The city was largely designed by the Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer.

We also visited Brazil in "Sao Paulo".

In Brasilia, there is the Cultural Complex of the Republic.

This is Brazil's Foreign Ministry building.

The residence of the president of Brazil is the Planalto Palace.

The following scenes begin the the Three Powers Plaza, where the government buildings of Brazil are located. The Three Powers refers to the three branches of government.

Here are some more scenes around central Brasilia. There are no old buildings because the idea for the city only arose in the late 1950s, and it was inaugurated as the capital in 1960.

This is also near the center of the city. There is a great avenue called the Monumental Axis.

Following is a business district of Brasilia.

This is still further from the city center.

The following scenes are not in Brasilia. This is a Brazilian town that is far out in the Amazon region.

Finally, in the middle of Brazil's Amazon region is a large city, called Manaus. Here are some views there.
