The Fortifications Of Southampton

Much of the medieval fortifications of Southampton have been preserved. Castles and city walls are built for protection. What tends to happen, for walls and castles in cities, is that they eventually get dismantled as a source of building stone when times change and they are no longer necessary for protection. That is why most castles in England today are away from cities, although this is not the case in Wales. Welsh cities tend to be built around castles while English cities are built around cathedrals.
