Remember Buffalo, NY

Let's not forget Buffalo, NY in all that is going on.

ALL IMAGES ARE FROM GOOGLE STREET VIEW

First, until Donald Trump the only U.S. President with two terms that were non-contiguous was Grover Cleveland. He was on his way out west and stopped to visit a relative in Buffalo. He ended up staying and became Sheriff of Erie County, then Mayor of Buffalo, then Governor of New York State and then, finally, President of the United States.

Second William McKinley is the president that was assassinated in Buffalo, at the Pan Am Exhibition of 1901. Before Donald Trump, this was the president that was especially known for tariffs. This used to be the primary source of revenue for the U.S. Government, before income tax. He also conducted the Spanish-American War, which got America involved in the Caribbean as it gained control of Cuba and Puerto Rico.

The first of the following two images is the site of William McKinley's assassination. After the Pan Am Exhibition it was developed into a residential neighborhood. The second image is of the McKinley Monument, in Niagara Square.

Third, Theodore Roosevelt was William McKinley's Vice President who rushed to Buffalo when he was shot. Roosevelt was inaugurated as president in Buffalo when McKinley died. The Monroe Doctrine, named for an earlier president, was the U.S. policy that the western hemisphere was off-limits to outside powers. But it was Theodore Roosevelt that really began enforcing it. He had been a veteran of the Spanish-American War. Theodore Roosevelt sent the Great White Fleet, of American battleships, on a tour around the world as a projection of American power. Roosevelt was a devotee of exercise, which he termed "The Strenuous Life".

It all culminated this week in the capture of the Venezuelan President. The following image shows the statue of Theodore Roosevelt, in front of the mansion where he was inaugurated as president.
