Tianjin And Dalian

On the coast of northern China, about 100 km from Beijing, is another of China's largest cities. This is the city of Tianjin. It is a natural place for a major city because it is as far inland as ships can go into northern China by way of the Yellow Sea, between China and Korea.

Among major Chinese cities the thing that is so unusual about Tianjin is it's youth. It was built during the Fifteenth Century, which was the Ming Dynasty. This does not apply to a city like Shenzhen, which grew as a result of a Special Economic Zone but, by the standards of ancient Chinese cities, Tianjin is still a young city.

This is around the center of Tianjin where there is some of the traditional Chinese architecture.

Across the inlet of the Yellow Sea, known as the Bohai Sea, from Tianjin is the city of Dalian. It is not only, like Tianjin, a very busy port, but is also known as a great place for a vacation. Dalian is near the end of the peninsula that separates the Yellow Sea from the Bohai Sea.

This is the recreational waterfront of Dalian.

There is another city in this general area that is actually very ancient, but was not a major city until relatively recently. It is the city of Shijazhuang, and today it is a center of industry. South of Shijazhuang is where the city of Yin was located. This was the capital of the Shang Dynasty, which existed in the Second Millennium B.C.

The Shang Dynasty was the first confirmed dynasty of China. There are very old references to a Xia Dynasty before that, but the Xia Dynasty is generally considered to be semi-mythical. The Shang Dynasty was followed by the Zhou Dynasty, which would be China's longest dynasty and would begin with their capital at what is now Xian. The Shang Dynasty capital of Yin was destroyed by the Zhou Dynasty and was rediscovered late in the Nineteenth Century. Following is artifacts and a reconstruction of Yin.
