Jakarta

The capital city of Indonesia began with a Hindu kingdom, on the island of Java, that lasted for nearly a thousand years. Today, it is one of the great cities of the world. Kuala Lumpur, Singapore and, Jakarta form nearly a straight line on the map.

The logical place to begin our visit to Jakarta is in the vast central Merdeka Square. The National Monument, celebrating the independence of Indonesia, is in the center of the square. The first three images are from Google Street View.

Not far from Merdeka Square is Jakarta Cathedral. The following scenes begin in there. The cathedral was built early in the Twentieth Century. The large mosque next to the cathedral is the Istiqlal Mosque. It was built next to the cathedral, in the 1970s, to emphasize the racial and religious harmony in Indonesia, which is actually the largest Moslem country in the world. This is known as the Taman Mini Indonesia Indah. It is like a theme park or exhibition to celebrate everything about Indonesia. This includes it's history, architecture and culture.

Indonesia is now in the process of building an entirely new capital city, to be called Nusantara, on the east coast of the island of Borneo. It will replace the crowded Jakarta. At the time this image from Google Street View was made the outline of the new city had not yet been built.
