What could have brought about this apparently nonsensical separatist movement in Alberta? It is difficult to imagine Alberta as a separate country. It would be landlocked and dependent on Canada to export oil.
Don't forget about symbolism. America's flag has a star for each of the fifty states. The thirteen stripes represent the thirteen original states. This symbolism affects Canada.
Canada has thirteen provinces and territories but the Maple Leaf has only eleven points. Since none of the three territories is a viable country, this makes it seem that two of the provinces should leave.
There used to be only one separatist movement, that of Quebec. But that was when there were twelve provinces and territories. The creation of Nunavut eventually brought about a second separatist movement, that of Alberta. The separatist party has regained power in Quebec, and it's separatist intentions were in the news, although it doesn't seem that many people are interested in separation.
